Learning Aligned Employment Program (LAEP)

General Information

The Learning-Aligned Employment Program (LAEP) offers eligible underrepresented students at public colleges and universities the opportunity to earn money and help defray their educational costs while gaining education-aligned, career-related employment.

LAEP and Financial Aid

LAEP is a type of financial aid and is included in the financial aid offer.  Income earned through LAEP cannot exceed the student's financial need or Cost of Attendance within an academic year.

Similar to the Federal Work Study (FWS) program, students will be paid directly for hours worked through a monthly paycheck, just like a normal job.  LAEP funds will not be applied toward tuition and fees.

 

Student Eligibility

To be eligible for LAEP, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) with Sonoma State University.
  • Be classified as a California resident
  • Be eligible for work in the US
  • Be enrolled in at least six units
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Additionally, students must meet one underrepresented descriptor, which includes but is not limited to the following:
    • First generation college student
    • Low-income student
    • Current or former foster youth
    • Homeless students or those at risk of becoming homeless
    • Students with disabilities
    • displaced workers
    • Students with dependent children
    • Formerly incarcerated students
    • Undocumented students
    • Students meeting the requirements of Assembly Bill 540 of the 2001-2002 Regular Session of the Legislature
    • Students who are Veterans

  1. Apply for LAEP job(s) on Handshake
  2. Student will be contacted directly if extended an invitation to interview
  3. If hired, the student will be contacted directly by Human Resources about completing employment paperwork.
